ECOO meets the European Commission on cross border prescriptions

June 2012

As a follow-up to ECOO, EUROM I and EUROMCONTACT‘s response to the public consultation on ‘measures for improving the recognition of prescriptions issued in another Member State’, ECOO met with the European Commission in June 2012. The meeting has been very insightful and clarified that the draft legislation, which will be published after the summer, will be sufficiently flexible to provide for optics’ requirements.

The European Commission rightly recognised the complexity of medical devices and their use, and concluded that requirements for these will not be specified. The scope will initially be limited to cross border prescriptions only, with the minimum requirement that where a patient indicates they wish to take their prescription abroad, it must be compliant.
